The Vero Beach Theatre Guild's "Best Director and Production" of the season award went to "All My Sons," the first show of the 2011-2012 season. This play, a drama by Arthur Miller, was my first performance with this community theater. I was in the smaller, though pivotal, role of George Deever. I was extremely gratified that the season ticket holders felt the production was as good as I believed it was. I saw how much the leads and supporting actors put into this production, and how hard the crew worked at assuring it came together as neatly as it did. It is a particularly emotional story to present, and the four major players told it well -- thanks to their devotion as well as the director and other crew.
The Guild's accolades are named the "Genies Awards" after a founder of the theater, which is one of the longest running community theaters in the state of Florida, founded in 1958. The Genie Awards Gala was held on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at the Elks Lodge in Vero Beach.
A drama is fairly rare at this theater. Notably, there were several actor awards given to performers in it, from Best Newcomer to Best Actor. In the coming season, there are no dramas, but this win shows that the regular audience supports drama. A sidebar to a local media article promoting the event explains: "Genie judges are season ticket holders who volunteer to see at least one performance of each of the five main shows in the season, later voting on a variety of categories."
I would like to be able to do more drama, and some of us hope to help guide dramas into the mix at the Guild, in some form.
