The New York Times published an admiring piece, looking at the original alternative newspaper, upon its demise.
The end of the left-leaning independent publication was an anticlimax, given the many empty red plastic Village Voice boxes that have been scattered like debris across the sidewalks of Manhattan in recent years.And one former employee nailed the modern reality of journalism on the head in this quote:
“We can’t afford to lose an important media outlet,” [longtime columnist Michael] Musto said. “It does leave a hole, but on the bright side, this sort of idiosyncratic rebellious spirit of The Voice has been subsumed, in a way, by the mainstream. It’s sort of everywhere.”And yet, the idea that "left-leaning" is just about everywhere today is denied almost everywhere.
Note: The Voice just "left-leaning"?! That's as strangely understated -- or flattering? -- as calling Winston Churchill fit, Trump reserved, or Goldwater "left-leaning."
